How to Paint a Metal Curtain Rod and Other Room Accessories

Learn how to paint a metal curtain rod and other room accessories with these easy tips and tutorial!
Sorry it has taken me so long to finish sharing Garrett’s room redo. I shared where I painted his ceiling fan and how I striped his wall. Now I’m going to show you how I painted his metal curtain rod and reading lamp.  I bought a metal curtain rod from Home Depot and a KVART wall lamp from Ikea. This lamp was only $10!

First, you will need to use fine grit sandpaper to sand everything down so that the paint will grab onto the metal.
Next you need to find a way to stand everything up so you can paint it all the way around. In the photo above, I punched finials into the box they came in. Below, I used my “momgenuity” and nailed 2 lawn stakes into the ground through the rest of the box they came in. Then I slid the curtain rod over the nail so they would stand up.

The lamp was the hardest to figure out, but using my keen “momgenuity” again, I used our recycling bin and pool toy pin with the holder to a yard sign. I left the cord in the plastic bag to avoid getting paint on it and hung the lamp over it.

To paint a metal curtain rod, you will need the following items:

Rust-Oleum Clean Metal Primer, Rust-Oleum Spray paint in the color of your choice, I used Carnival Red,and the Rust-Oleum Spray Can Comfort Grip. If you have ever experienced the pain of spray can cramp, you will think you have died and gone to paint heaven with this thing. Trust me.

The second step to this process is to prime your metal and let it dry. The day I decided to do this was overcast and the air was really wet, so it took a bit longer.

Last is the fun part of painting your color on. I applied 3 light coats –  After the first coat, it started raining, so I scrambled to get my rods out of the yard. My yard stakes were nailed into a 2×4 so I could finish them in the garage because I have no patience for waiting and wanted to get them done. And here are the finished painted curtain rods. I love them!

The lamp has a little handle on it that can be pulled up or down, avoiding fingers from getting burned. I think it turned out really cute. It hangs near his loft bed, so he can turn it off and on without getting down. However, he sneaks at night after he is supposed to be asleep and turns it on to read! How did the paint hold up on the curtain rod? Did it chip off? I have some unused curtain rods flailing around.

It's been a few years and they still look great although we don't really pull the curtains back and forth much either just to let you know.

I really wanted to read this page but the advertisements took up the lower 1/3 of the page and kept flashing and moving causing it to be hard to move down the page because it was using up all the GIGS.
