Homemade Pizza

I’m so thrilled Netflix asked me to share with you one of my favorite ways to spend time with my family making homemade pizza and watching a movie!

When Garrett was 3 years old he and I developed a tradition. Movie and Pizza Night! When my husband was ill and had to go on Fridays for chemo Garrett and I would make homemade pizza and watch a movie as a treat on those nights. It made it a little easier to not focus on where Daddy was. We have continued this tradition and at least 2 nights a month we have pizza and movie night. Renting movies can get expensive and I am THE WORST at returning them to those cute little kiosks. There are times I have paid as much in fees as I would have if I had just bought the darn thing. This is why we LOVE Netflix! Tonight we are celebrating the end of school and the beginning of summer!

In the past Netflix only had older movies and TV shows to chose from but now they have a new Just for Kids Section that has some great options! The dedicated kids section has family favorites appropriate for children ages 2- 12. All content is selected with help from Common Sense Media to provide ratings, reviews and information so parents can easily make choices for their kids! You can see what we are watching below.

We love the Lorax! Netflix makes family time so easy and affordable. The best part is that you can get Netflix anywhere! We have the Netflix app on our iPhone, iPad, and I watch it on my laptop! It is so easy to watch you just download the free app on your iPad, click on the Netflix app on any gaming device or visit Netflix.com on your computer – and you’re in business. I have no idea how our parents ever made a long trip without entertainment but I am so looking forward to our trip to Orlando this weekend knowing I can pull up tons of great shows with Just for Kids on Netflix in the car.

{Now what would movie and
pizza night be without Pizza!}

First we have to discuss equipment. I have used a pizza pan that is basically a round cookie sheet, pizza stones and then I found this cast iron Mario Batali 12-in. Pizza Pan  . Not only does it make a crispy crust but it also has handles and does not require a peel! I am telling you it is the best thing since sliced bread!

First you need to heat your oven to 425 degrees and put the pan on the lowest rack for 30 minutes to an hour. Yes you heard me. If you want a truly crispy bottom on your crust this is the only way to do it.

Now for the Pizza. We have tried to make many dough recipes but they never seem to turn out as stretchy as we want. We buy fresh dough from our local Publix in the deli section. I usually buy 10 at a time and freeze them. The day we have pizza I pull the dough out in the morning and leave it on the counter, when it’s time for dinner they are perfect. You can also contact your local pizza joint to buy some dough.

Get all of your toppings together, the kids just like cheese but the hubs and I like any of the following depending what is on hand: pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, mild Italian sausage, fresh basil and fresh mozzarella. We use Rao’s Pizza Sauce , again I have tried Ragu and Prego but Rao’s is the best when you don’t have time for homemade.

So get your hot pan out of the oven and put your stretched out dough on it. Put on your sauce be careful not to use too much and then your cheese. After your cheese add your pepperoni and other toppings. ( I know you think that is backwards but it is not trust me this way the veggies get cooked enough and the pepperoni get’s a little crispy) If you are using fresh mozzarella put it on last.

Place your pizza back in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the edges are crispy brown and the cheese is bubbly.

If you are making a second pizza put the pan back in the oven for 20 minutes to heat it back up.

Put on trays and eat picnic style in front of the TV while you watch your favorite Netflix Just For Kids Movie! What are you watching on TV with your family? Netflix has family favorites from Disney, Disney Jr., Hasbro, Cartoon Network and Dreamworks that are available to stream anytime, anywhere. And streaming is easier than you think! Download the free app on your iPad, click on the Netflix app on any gaming device, go to the website on your computer – and you’re in business. Check it out here!
