Getting a good night’s sleep is a battle I’ve fought for years. A few years ago I went to a sleep clinic but was not diagnosed with sleep apnea. I did learn a few things about what was really affecting my sleep. I have used medication in the past but I end up being groggy in the morning. Recently, I’ve been working a lot on how to get a good night sleep naturally so I don’t have to use medicine anymore and I want to show you how you can too.
Here are my top tips on how to get a good night’s sleep
Temperature – The perfect temperature for a good night’s sleep is between 68-72 degrees. You want the room to be cool. According to H. Craig Heller, PhD, professor of biology at Stanford University, who wrote a chapter on temperature and sleep for a medical textbook. “When you go to sleep, your set point for body temperature — the temperature your brain is trying to achieve — goes down. Think of it as the internal thermostat.” If it’s too cold or too hot, the body struggles to achieve this set point.
Light – Blue light emitted from electronic devices suppresses the production of melatonin. Melatonin is the chemical your body naturally produces to help you sleep. I finally realized that one of the things waking me up at night are the lights on our TV Cable Box. Once I covered them up and it really helped.
Caffeine – Caffeine is a stimulant and can take hours to wear off. I quit drinking caffeine after 12:00 noon and really noticed a difference.
Sleep Apps – Two apps that I use are Sleep Cycle and White Noise Lite . Having ADD means that my mind will not stop the whirlwind when I go to bed. White noise is great for focusing your mind on something else so you can go to sleep. Personally I love the beach sound. Sleep Cycle tracts your sleep and starts to wake you up at the best time according to your sleep patterns. This avoids you waking up in a deep sleep leaving your more tired during the day.
Your Mattress – When my husband and I got married the mattress he had was over 30 years old. Sleeping on it gave me a back ache and the thought that it was that old just grossed me out. One of our first purchases was a new mattress. We both slept much better and no more back aches in the morning.
