Mason jar Christmas gifts are a great way to get the most bang for your buck when you’re trying to save money for the holidays. Gift giving can be hard for teachers, friends, or extended family, but these mason jar Christmas gifts will be perfect without breaking the budget.
Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but not when you’re stressed about bills that will hit in January. My husband and I took the Dave Ramsey budgeting course, and ended up teaching it for two years.
The biggest rule we have for our budget is cash only, no charge cards. The National Retail Federation predicts that the average American family will spend an estimated $786 on holiday gifts. Without a plan in place, the costs can add up quickly.
I’m going to help by giving you four ways to spread cheer while saving your wallet this holiday season.
- Know how much to budget – 1.5 percent of your annual income is the max you should spend on gift giving. Behind this year, no worries in January set aside this amount every month and by Christmas of next year you will be breathing easier.
- Keep your Christmas money in a separate account – Open an account at Regions Bank and have a regular amount transferred over from each paycheck. It’s the adage of out of sight out of mind. This will keep you from accidentally spending it during the year. We have also opened a savings account for each of our boys to put money given to them at holidays and birthdays in. This prevents them from blowing the money and saving for something they really want. Our oldest, whose 12, is saving to help pay for his car when he starts driving.
- Make a plan, so you don’t overspend– It’s tempting to go big but that is not a great lesson to teach your kids, and no one wants you to suffer to buy them something. Make a plan by making a list of what you are going to buy for each person with the cost next to it and where you are buying it. This will help you stick to your budget and prevent you from overspending because you couldn’t figure out what to buy.
- Look for deals – There are all sorts of apps for your phone or computer to get the best price today. Most toys are on sale the first two weeks of December so make sure you are getting the best deal possible to make your budget stretch further.
For all the people you want to give something special to, here are some budget friendly Christmas gifts that anyone can make. Many of them have free printable tags you can attach to dress up your mason jar gifts.
