I love mercury glass and wanted some to decorate with for Christmas this year. I wanted a less shiny finish so I found a way for you to make Matte Mercury Glass. I used it to make some cute Votive Candles but I am sure you can come up with lots of other great uses for it.
This process was really simple and here is all you need:
- Krylon Metallic Spray Paint
- Spray Bottle
- 50/50 water and white vinegar mixed
- Scrapbook Stickers
- Glass Votives
- Paper Towels
First let me start by saying that paint is flammable. Usually when people make faux mercury glass they usually paint the inside of the item. Since I wanted to use real candles in mine I painted the outside.
Clean your votives and take off any stickers. Place your scrapbook stickers where you want them on the votive and then lightly spray your votive with the water vinegar mix.
You want drops not runs so it may be a little trial and error as to where to hold the spray bottle. If you get runs or drips just wipe it off with a paper towel and start over. Place your votive on a drop cloth and then spray it with your paint. You will see the paint will not penetrate the water and the water leaves little beads.
Let the paint dry, it only takes a minute or two and wipe the water off lightly with a paper towel. Do not scrub just wipe. Then pull off your scrapbook sticker and let it dry for about another 15 minutes.
That is IT! These {Matte} Mercury Glass Votive Candles can go anywhere you want them, to add a little sparkle and fun to your holiday decorations.
