How to make your own carpet deodorizer that works but the smell is not overpowering

Homemade Carpet Deodorizer is easy to make and you can adjust the scent to your preference.Hate overpowering carpet deodorizers? DIY your own with this easy homemade cleaner recipe

Does your carpet get dirty and smelly from kids and pets? Mine does! Our dog sheds a lot and I have to vacuum every other day. I have bought powdered carpet deodorizers from the store, but the scent is so strong I start sneezing immediately after I start to sprinkle it. With such a strong smell it really makes me wonder if it is helping or just covering up. Since I like to make some homemade cleaners, I decided to give making homemade carpet deodorizer a try.

Here is how to make my super simple homemade carpet deodorizer:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup borax powder
  • 20-30 drops of essential oil, this is optional

Here is why this homemade carpet deodorizer works:

Baking Soda is a is a freshener and deodorizer

Borax  controls odors because the natural boron and salt in Borax make a natural disinfectant.

I bought a cheese shaker at my local dollar store and put in the baking soda and borax.

Use Essential oils to make a low odor carpet deodorizer that works

Then I added in the essential oil. I used lavender because it’s calming and we all need calming! Then, using a popsicle stick, I stirred it all together. Stir it really good so it all get’s blended and the oil doesn’t get clumpy.

stir together 3 ingredients to make a low odor carpet deodorizer that really works

I sprinkled it on the carpet and did not sneeze my head off from all the strong odor! I only waited about 5 minutes before I vacuumed it up. You can also sprinkle some of this in your car, on your upholstered furniture, or in your trashcan to freshen it!

Make Your own Carpet Deodorizer and save lots of money

Glad you can’t see here just how bad I need a pedicure! This stuff worked great! The dog hair and odor were gone and  the bonus was it freshened up my vacuum as well!

I use a blend by doTerra called Purify which smells delightful, kills odors, and kills germs. I also sprinkle it on my fabric sofas and in my car before I vacuum them. It works like a charm!
  2. Made this with lemon essential oil- waiting 10 minutes to vacuum but it already smells great! My dog pees on my rug from time to time so i am already making a second batch!

  3. Great idea - I need to try this!
  4. I love that this allows you to control the ingredients in the deodorizer. So many products in the store have ingredients that we can't pronounce and surely are not good for us.
