Halloween Mod Podge Block Sign

Pin It Now!

In my quest to jazz up my mantle this year I wanted to make a block sign. Hubby had some old 2x4 in the basement so I marked it out and had my dad cut it into blocks, the tallest is about 6 inches.

First I lined all my blocks up on my mantle so I could decide on the sizing pattern I liked. After I was satisfied with it I wrote on each block the letter it would be. ignore the skeleton that was Garrett's addition. If you like my Spiderweb Garland you can see how I made it here.

Then I took them outside and painted the sides and the front with black spray paint. You can use craft paint but I have 4 cans of spray paint so I used it.

After they had 2-3 coats on them and were dry (well almost I am so impatient) I went out to sand the edges a little with sandpaper to give them a distressed look.

Wouldn't you know all of the sudden every leaf in our back yard started falling down in a swirling dervish and it was starting to sprinkle so I did not get them as distressed as I wanted.

Next I took scrapbook paper and printed the letters on 8x8 paper. I had an old Halloween paper pack that I used. Make sure that you allow for each letter to be the same amount of inches from the bottom of the block and that you allow for the height of each block above the letter. This will allow for all of your letters to line up across the bottom.  I started with my A because I wanted to get the crow in the right place.

Once they were printed out I cut them with my scrapbooking paper cutter. Apparently my blade was dull because it left these paper turds along the edge.

So I got out my sandpaper and lightly sanded from the back and it got all those little hangy pieces off!

Now I grabbed Mod Podge. I have never really used this stuff before. ( I know and you wonder how I can call myself a crafter!) I spread the Mod Podge on the block and then put on the cut paper.

Umm can I just tell you it is not easy to photograph yourself while trying to craft at the same time. Then I used the roller thingy that is supposed to get all the bubbles out and excess Mod Podge.

Once it was dry I put another coat of Mod Podge on top. Apparently I did something wrong because a got a few bubbles on 2 of my letters, maybe I should have gotten out that Mod Podge Rocks book I bought to actually learn how to do it before I do it!

Don't you love that last picture, it's literally like watching glue dry!

Here is the final, I love them! I arrange them straight or stack them up like the first picture! Considering that I did not have to buy one thing I am really happy with them!

Hopefully I will have the mantle finished by the end of the week but my fall festival is this weekend so I may not get it done till next week. Oh well that's how I roll by the seat of my pants!
