Do your kids hate crust? When I had my first child, Garrett, I swore I would not be one of those mom's that cut the crust off a PBJ. Then he started preschool and apparently some of his friends had one of THOSE mom's. Now I am one of THOSE mom's. Yes I bowed to the God of cutting off the crust and deserve a 1000 lashes but if I don't cut off the crust he leaves a good inch of sandwich all the way around and does not eat enough of it. When I used to coupon (I say that like I did it for a while it lasted about 3 months until I decided the time spent on it was not worth the time I was missing with my family) I would get deals on the name brand frozen PBJ's that are in the shape of a circle. I had a round cutter just like that from pampered chef but was not a big fan of it. So I am going to show you how I make these for my kids lunches.
They thaw out by lunch and are perfect. I have also tried it with ham and cheese with light mayo and it worked as well. So now that I am one of THOSE mom's at least I feel like I'm smart about it! How about you? What are some of the things you swore you would never do before you had kids and find yourself doing?

I do this assembly line style, today the Hubs helped me. He thought I was a freak showing people how to make a PBJ for my blog until he understood it was more than that.
First I lay out 2 loaves of bread by 2's. My family uses whole wheat I think my kids would freak if they saw white bread.
Then we put on PBJ, now the hubs and I have differing opinions on how to do that. Mine is it really does not matter how you put it on there as long as they are both on there. I put peanut butter on first and then the jelly on top of that and close it up. Hubs thinks you need to spread peanut butter on both slices and then jelly on one. I ask you really can it make that much difference? And he calls me anal!
Then you take this cutter and sealer. I got it hanging on the bread isle at Publix. there are 2 pieces the outer square is the cutter and the inner square seals the edges.
You just press it like this and it really uses most of the bread so there is not waste, love that! Chili our dog is always hanging close by for some crust love!
Each sandwich goes in a regular sandwich bag, then they all go into a big freezer bag and into the freezer. Every morning when I make lunches I just pop it in the lunch box along with everything else.

ReplyDeleteVery smart! I love everything that can be made ahead, such a time saver! Thanks for sharing at The Fun In Functional!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely making these for my 4 year old. She loves the undesirable brand sandwiches but I like how I can pick the jelly and peanut butter now. I have the same cutter that I got at Wal-Mart
ReplyDeleteDo you make the ham & cheese sandwiches like you normally would or are there any special ways to do it when freezing? If they thaw out in time for lunch I would love to make them in advance and have a freezer stash on hand!
ReplyDeleteHey Haley thanks for asking, I made them like I normally would, which in myu family is ham and cheese with a small amount of mayo. In the morning I just pop it in the kids lunchbox and it is ready for lunch by 11:15
